Former GF City Council Member To Serve In AfghanistanNow this former Grand Forks City Council member, local talk show host, and baseball coach will be heading to serve in a war-torn country again.
Major Mike McNamara has a room full of military memories from two tours of duty in Iraq.
McNamara says, “I love the Marine Corps, and my service in Iraq has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.”
Now this former Grand Forks City Council member, local talk show host, and baseball coach will be heading to serve in a war-torn country again...this time Afghanistan...at the urging of some military friends.
McNamara says, “I decided I wasn't going to run again for city council, and they knew about it, so a couple of them started calling, and said, ‘We're going back. Would you go with us?’”
While McNamara says he's anxious to see what it's like in Afghanistan and help his country, he says he'll miss making memories with his four kids and wife.
McNamara says, “Saying goodbye to your wife and kids is always the worst part of the whole event.”
Daughter Katherine McNamara says, “I'll miss him in person, but you get that over e-mail, which I really like. I save every email I've ever gotten from him.”
Daughter Colleen McNamara says, “He'll mean a lot to me, and that I'll miss him very much, and I'll just want to go and see him.”
The goodbyes will be tough, but McNamara says meeting those who risk their lives every day will make the sacrifice worth it.
“It does. It takes your breath away. It brings a tear to your eye because they risk their lives for each other every day. They always have a smile on their faces, so it's not very hard to say yes because it's such a great experience to see them every day.”
McNamara will be leaving on Monday for training and then going to Afghanistan.
