MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Denard Span tied a modern-era record with three triples and also had five RBIs to get Minnesota back into first place in the AL Central with an 11-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.

Span also had a single and a walk for the Twins (42-35), who moved a half-game ahead of the Tigers (41-35) one night after losing their division lead for the first time since early April. Span became the first player since Atlanta's Rafael Furcal in 2002 to hit three triples in a game.

Nick Blackburn (7-5) ended a June swoon with his first victory of the month. He gave up four runs and seven hits with four strikeouts in seven innings.

Armando Galarraga (3-2) allowed six runs and seven hits in four innings for the Tigers.

Minnesota designated hitter Jim Thome hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, his second homer in as many nights and the 572nd of his career. Thome needs one home run to tie former Twin Harmon Killebrew for tenth place on the all-time list.
