The retail task force is looking at hiring a company to do a survey.
The Buxton corporation is a company that does research on where people are spending their money and what items they're buying.
The company gives that information to the city so they can share it with retailers and encourage local people to start up their own businesses.
Mayor Michael Brown went before the task force tonight with a proposal and thinks this research will help new businesses come to Grand Forks.
"The city gets to reverse its leakage in sales tax. Larger businesses get more information to grow a stronger retail sector." Grand Forks Mayor Mike Brown said, "The smaller businesses help level the playing field, and property owners get a decrease on property tax for filling our retail sales space, so it's win, win, win, win, win, so I think we need to move this forward."
City Council members also discussed the Grand Forks budget for next year tonight, including a possible increase in utility bills.
