Former Sioux Perry Nakonechny dies

Manitoba native was 47

FORMER UND MEN'S HOCKEY FORWARD PERRY NAKONECHNY DIED WEDNESDAY AT HIS GRAND FORKS HOME AFTER A LONG BATTLE WITH CANCER.

NAKONECHNY'S FAMILY POSTED THE NEWS ON A CARINGBRIDGE WEBSITE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, SAYING NAKONECHY DIED SHORTLY AFTER 12:00 NOON.

NAKONECHNY WAS FORTY-SEVEN.

NAKONECHNY WAS A MEMBER OF UND'S 1987 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM.

HE PLAYED FOUR YEARS AT UND, SCORING 27 GOALS AND 38 ASSISTS FOR 65 POINTS IN 144 CAREER GAMES.

AFTER COLLEGE, NAKONECHNY WAS AN ASSISTANT BOYS HOCKEY COACH AT GRAND FORKS RED RIVER HIGH SCHOOL FOR THREE SEASONS. THE ROUGHRIDERS WON STATE TITLES EACH OF THOSE SEASONS.

THE DAUPHIN, MANITOBA, NATIVE THEN SERVED AS RED RIVER'S HEAD COACH FROM 1990 TO 1993. HIS BEST FINISH WAS THIRD PLACE IN 1993.

NAKONECHNY IS SURVIVED BY A WIFE, MICKIE; SON, TYLER, AND DAUGHTER, BRENNA.

VISITATION IS SCHEDULED FRIDAY AT HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC CHURCH IN GRAND FORKS FROM 5:00 TO 7:00 P.M., WITH A PRAYER SERVICE AT 7:00 P.M.

FUNERAL SERVICES ARE SET FOR SATURDAY MORNING AT 11:00 A.M. AT HOLY FAMILY CHURCH, WITH VISITATION ONE HOUR BEFORE THE SERVICE.
