You can save a little extra money by finding out how to cut energy costs in your home.

That's thanks to Xcel Energy and the Grand Forks Public Library, who have teamed up to provide homeowners with energy meters.

The Grand Forks Public Library has six power check energy meters and six energy thermometers available to check out for as long as one week.

The devices are easy to use and can help you pinpoint where you're wasting energy in your own home.

The energy meter can read things like watts used by an appliance and the cost per hour. The thermometer will tell you the temperature around windows, doors, and other areas that may need more insulation.

The goal is to help people consume energy in a more cost-effective way.

"Energy saving, energy efficient, and being aware of how much, especially with appliances. Some appliances use energy when they're plugged in even if they aren't being used," Grand Forks Library Reference Supervisor Toni Vonasek said.

Both the energy meter and the energy thermometer can be checked out at the library's circulation desk at no charge, just bring your library card.
