Crookston Could See A Raise In Property Taxes

People in Crookston might be paying more in property taxes next year.

People in Crookston might be paying more in property taxes next year. Over the past few months the city of Crookston has been looking at its budget.

City leaders are thinking about increasing property taxes by 2 percent...but it's still early on in the budget process. Mayor Dave Genereux says that no one should worry yet. They still have more budget meetings to figure out ways to flatten the increase to zero.

If there is an increase in Property taxes it would generate another 30 thousand dollars.

"If were only talking two percent it will be a very minimal amount of property tax but you have to realize that there are other entities too involved such as, we have the school district and we have the county" says Mayor Dave Genereux.

A preliminary budget and levy must be approved in September; the final budget and levy have to be certified in December. The city's finance committee will talk about the levy more at its next meeting in August.
