FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) - A man accused of animal cruelty for trying to kill his dog failed to appear at the Otter Tail County courthouse Monday where demonstrators had gathered with their pets.

Benjamin Stavaas of Battle Lake is charged with six counts of animal cruelty. Authorities say Stavaas cut his dog's throat in a fit of anger and left it for dead June 15. The dog, a German shepherd mix named Star, wandered into a rural Fergus Falls yard about a week later, was taken to a veterinarian and survived.

The Forum of Fargo says an Otter Tail County District Court judge issued a warrant for Stavaas' arrest. About 20 demonstrators had gathered for the court appearance. More than 1,000 people also signed an online petition calling for Stavaas to receive the maximum penalty if convicted.
