WASHINGTON (AP) - The Labor Department says unemployment rates rose last month in most of the nation's 374 largest metro areas.
The increases were largely a result of a wave of teenagers into the work force, looking for summer jobs.
Bismarck, which has Bismarck State College and other institutions, had the largest proportional increase in unemployment, from 3 percent to 3.8 percent. The city still remained the metro area with the lowest unemployment rate in the country.
Grand Forks and Fargo also were among the areas with the 10 largest increases in unemployment. Those cities are home to the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State.
The Labor Department says the unemployment rate rose in 291 of the 374 areas across the country in June from May. It fell in 55 areas and was flat in 28. That reverses the trend of the previous three months, when joblessness fell in most metro areas.
