Grant Provides Better Internet Access In Hillsboro

A small, North Dakota town is getting up to speed with much of the rest of the Red River Valley. Hillsboro has received a grant to improve internet and television service in town.

You can't call the small town of Hillsboro as being old or behind the times. The Halstad Telephone Company received the Broadband Stimulus Grant for 4.5 million dollars. This grant will allow Fiber optic cable to be distributed to every house and every business.

Beth Christianson-Melby/HTC Rep.: "Well what the fiber optic cable will do will allow us for future growth, and that's what HTC their goal has been trying to bring that to this community."

The cable will not only be laid in town; the crews will be putting down 280 miles of cable in rural Hillsboro as well...speeding up internet service and providing more options for H-D television.

Beth Christianson-Melby/HTC Rep.:"Phase one is the city of Hillsboro, Phase two is rural Hillsboro then after that they will they will look at the Minnesota side of the river and the original Coop members and deploying some of them services as well. "

They are hoping to get to phase two in the Middle of August. With this grant, it costs no money to the tax payers of Hillsboro.

Beth Christianson-Melby/HTC Rep.:"All the plowing that's happening and all the and bring the cable to everyone is free no one will need to pay for that that's included in the grand money the the Broadband stimulus funds but for services of course everyone needs to pay for those."

Melby says crews will not have to enter any homes when installing the cable.
