BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota's Supreme Court has decided to keep a state district judgeship in New Rockford.

The position has been open since incumbent Judge James Bekken died last May.

The court considered moving the position about 17 miles south to Carrington, or transferring it about 140 miles to Lisbon in southeastern North Dakota.

The court's decision Tuesday says it isn't worthwhile to move the judgeship a short distance when its New Rockford location is ready to take a new judge.

The ruling says moving the job to Lisbon would hurt judicial service in the New Rockford area, in east-central North Dakota.

Gov. John Hoeven will appoint Bekken's successor later.
