After five weeks of hauling trash to Fargo the new Grand Forks landfill is now up and running.
Construction on about five acres in the Northwest corner of the landfill is complete and trucks started hauling the trash to the dump today.
The solid garbage is flattened and pressed into bales and then bagged to help control the birds that are attracted to the landfill because it is less than five miles away from the airport.
Public works director Todd Feland says he is relieved that the new landfill is open and it was zoned and permitted the right way.
Todd Feland: "easier logistically and cost wise, and obviously the city of Fargo didn't want it to go on forever either so they have to get back to their regular operation too so, I think the five weeks was about enough and I'm glad we can transition to the new site."
Earlier this month the lawsuit against the city for the zoning of the new landfill was dismissed.
