BIA Police Officer Arrested For Stabbing Woman

A Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer is charged with aggravated assault after authorities say he stabbed a woman in Devils Lake.

According to the Devils Lake Journal, 41-year-old Duane Gunville was arrested after a standoff in Belcourt.

Authorities say a Devils Lake woman called 911 early Saturday morning after she reported being stabbed with a knife several times. The Journal also says that the woman was treated and released at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake.

Gunville ran from authorities and left Devils Lake- and was found Saturday afternoon in Belcourt and held authorities in a standoff there. He was eventually taken into custody.

The Devils Lake Journal says Gunville works as a BIA Police Officer on the Spirit Lake Nation.

Aggravated Assault carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
