CAMP GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) - The North Dakota National Guard's Camp Grafton training area is shrinking, but not by design.
Seventeen years ago, the facilities were spread over 2,000 mostly wooded acres south of the city of Devils Lake. The lake of the same name has risen almost 30 feet since then, and Lt. Col. Clark Johnson says Camp Grafton's land area has been cut about in half.
The National Guard spent $1.5 million last year to reinforce the banks on the southeast shore of the camp. Another $1.5 million is being spent this year. The Guard also has had to move about half a dozen buildings.
