FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker says a delay in the proposed Red River diversion project in the Fargo-Moorhead area is a "good possibility."

He made the comment after a closed-door meeting with Army Corps of Engineers officials.

The corps is considering a delay because of the amount of written opposition to the project, which would provide long-term flood control for the metro area. Much of the opposition comes from people who believe it might worsen flooding downstream.

The corps next Thursday plans to release a decision on whether to slow the process. The current schedule calls for a feasibility study to be ready by December for recommendation to Congress.

Reporters were not allowed at Thursday's meeting. Walaker said no more than two city commissioners were present and they were not acting on behalf of the commission.
