2 Men Drowned in Red Lake River

28-year-old from East Grand Forks and 24-year-old from Grand Forks were tubing on the Red Lake River Sunday afternoon.

Two men from Greater Grand Forks drowned in the Red Lake River over the weekend.

The victims are a 28-year-old from East Grand Forks and a 24-year-old from Grand Forks. Their names are being withheld until relatives can be told.

The Red Lake County Sheriff's department says the two were tubing on the river late yesterday afternoon when they got off their tubes in shallow water north of the County 13 bridge to retrieve some garbage that had fallen into the river.

As the men walked toward shore, they stepped into deeper water and were unable to make it across.

The sheriff's department was called at about 6:30 and searchers recovered the bodies at around midnight. The Sheriff's department says foul play is not suspected and it appears to be an accidental drowning.

Red Lake County Sheriff's department says the drownings serve as a reminder that currents and unpredictable water depths make the Red Lake River dangerous to anyone who is not a strong swimmer. The department says anyone who is not an experienced swimmer should never leave their tube because shallow water can become deep quickly.
