Texting While Driving Going Back To CouncilTexting while driving may be getting closer to being illegal in the city of Grand Forks.
Texting while driving may be getting closer to being illegal in the city of Grand Forks.
This is a topic that has consistently been brought up at Grand Forks city council meetings, and tonight people talked about their concerns.
This ordinance was first brought to the council in June and sent to the service/safety committee for a recommendation.
Tonight at the meeting they made the recommendation for the council to adopt the ordinance and to move the process forward with a 20-dollar fine instead of the 30-dollar fine previously recommended.
Some concerns were brought up from people both for and against the ban.
"I'm not against safety and don't get me wrong, I'm not against talking about this thing, but this is a law that could be educated." State Board of Higher Education member Dwayne Espegard said.
"I hope that this council will look at this and say, "you know what, our city deserves to be protected, our people deserve to be protected and you will look at passing the texting ban." Safe Kids Coordinator Carma Hanson said.
The second reading of the ordinance will happen at a city council meeting on September 7th.
