Currently there are three bridge in the Greater Grand Forks area allowing access across the Red River.
However, they are all in close proximity in the north and the communities on either side are growing to the south.
The Metropolitian Planning Organization has been looking at a southern location for over forty years. Within the next ten years there will be one.
Some have speculated that 32nd Avenue will be the next location but before that near the Grand Forks Country Club is Merrifield Road it will be the next location to cross the river.
"We are working with Polk County and Grand Forks County they wanted to have the Thompson bridge replacement in place first before they more aggressively pursued the Merrifield bridge," Earl Haugen, MPO Executive Director.
Work on the Thompson replacement bridge will be completed this fall and open to traffic.
The 32nd Avenue bridge will be built in the next fifteen to twenty years.
