GF Dairy Queen On South Washington To Be Torn Down

After more then half a century of summer soft serve on South Washington the dairy queen in Grand Forks will be torn down.

After 55 summers of soft serve service at the Dairy Queen on South Washington, Today the last blizzard has left the building. The South Washington land mark will be torn down, with a new Dairy Queen in it's place.

JoAnne Flaten / Dairy Queen Owner: "Originally it has a walk up, had the side windows, customers stepped up. "

Owner JoAnne Flaten has worked in the building with family and friends since 1981. She says there have been some additions through the years, but it is time for a change.

JoAnne: "Spent a lot of years here and there is a lot of memories tied to my parents and working with them."

The new Dairy Queen will feature an Orange Julius store and will have twice the space with seating for thirty people.

Joann Flaten : "Getting harder to heat and cool. Older equipment in it. We don't have seating, add some seating."

With the high traffic counts on South Washington, businesses has been sweet for the store.

JoAnne Flaten: "Traffic count is important because a bigger percentage of business is drive through. "

Flaten say she plans on keeping the business seasonal, but will now have an option to keep stay open year around.
