Standing Rock gets 2nd petition on Fighting Sioux

FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) — The Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council has been presented with another resolution on the University of North Dakota's nickname and logo.

FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) — The Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council has been presented with another resolution on the University of North Dakota's nickname and logo.

This one urges the council to stick with a 1992 resolution asking UND to stop using Fighting Sioux. It was presented on Friday.

The council is already mulling a resolution calling for a tribal vote of support for the symbols.

UND has started retiring them, under orders from the state Board of Higher Education. Advocates for retaining the Fighting Sioux believe the board could be persuaded to reverse its position if the people of Standing Rock vote to say they approve, as voters on the Spirit Lake Sioux reservation did last year.

The Standing Rock reservation straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border.
