Congressman Collin Peterson Talks to East Grand Forks About F-M DiversionEast Grand Forks officials and township leaders met with Congressman Collin Peterson on the Fargo-Moorhead diversion Project.
East Grand Forks officials and township leaders met with Congressman Collin Peterson on the Fargo-Moorhead diversion Project. Peterson presented his plan on how he wants to divert the water while protecting those downstream.
Congressman Peterson made it clear that Moorhead does not need a diversion and that they would be happy with a flood wall like Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. But Fargo is a strong supporter of a diversion.
The East Grand Forks city council says if they do build the diversion its going to send more water our way.
Last year the city spent 300 thousand dollars on flood preparations. City leaders worry higher river levels will more more frequent flooding that will require longer bridge closures and more money spent on maintaining flood barriers.
Peterson says that Fargo-Moorhead will not let more water come our way and everyone needs to start working together.
"This is not going to be easy, there is going to be a lot of controversy, there will be a lot of, at the end of the day everyone is not going to be 100 percent happy but we can do this and we need to do it" Peterson said.
Peterson says that the diversion will not be built for another 15 years.
