Traill County Sheriff's deputies were called to a house near Grandin, North Dakota last night after a teen was accidentally shot.

Traill County Sheriff's deputies were called to a house near Grandin, North Dakota last night after a teen was accidentally shot.

A 16-year-old boy from Halstad, Minnesota was shot last night by another 16-year-old at a party...and authorities say this is the first time a shooting like this has occurred in Traill County.

"We received a 911call last night at 9:53 that a 16-year-old male had been shot." Traill County Sheriff Mike Crocker said.

The teens were at a volleyball game in Hillsboro before meeting up with some people outside of town.

"They were invited by some Cass Valley North students to come to a party West of Grandin." Crocker said.

A party that would leave one 16-year-old shot, after another 16-year-old brought a weapon that authorities say he was showing off.

"The suspect came out of the house, put some alcoholic beverages in his vehicle and took out a shotgun." Crocker said.

Officers say at this point they think the shooting was accidental in part because the suspect said the gun wasn't loaded before it went off.

The shooting took place on farm property and authorities say a soda bottle may have saved the victims life.

"When he shot the victim, the victim was holding a 20 ounce Mountain Dew bottle and the round went through the Mountain Dew bottle first, we figure maybe that's what saved his life." Crocker said.

The 16-year-old suspect was brought to Cass County Juvenile Center in Fargo and the victim to Hillsboro Hospital where he remains in recovery from wounds to the chest and fingers.

"I talked to the father this morning and he came through surgery well, hopefully he turns out fine. It's very rare in Traill County that we have any type of shooting, any type of calls with people with weapons. Especially with juveniles, we've never had one." said Crocker.

The suspect will be charged with reckless endangerment and a minor in consumption.

The shooting is still under investigation.
