GRAND FORKS -- Grand Forks Red River defeated arch-rival Central 13-0 in the annual Cushman Classic on a rainy Friday night at Cushman Field.
Red River improves its record to 3-0, while Central falls to 0-3, suffering its second consecutive shutout loss.
The game was the Eastern Dakota Conference opener for both teams.
The Riders opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Matt Hanson to Brian Lillemoen for a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Hanson threw another 19-yard scoring strike to Jeff Dennison for a 13-0 halftime lead.
Red River senior running back A.J. Johnstone paced the ground game, carrying 35 times for 136 yards.
Central managed one first down in the first half, then threatened to score in the third quarter. But on fourth down from the Red River 15-yard-line, the Riders blitzed Gage Salquist, who threw an incomplete pass to end the drive.
The victory marked the first time the Roughriders won back-to-back Cushman Classics since 1998-99.
Next Friday, Central meets Fargo South at 5:00 p.m. in the Fargodome. Red River also plays in the Fargodome against Fargo Davies at 8:00 p.m.
