Devils Lake Working Group Report Delayed

A report from a White House Task Force studying Devils Lake will likely be delayed.

The report was supposed to come out September 20, but Vice President Joe Biden Told the North Dakota Congressional delegation on Friday that the task force he created needs more time.

That's because the state just sent a request this week to relax water quality standards on the lower reaches of the Sheyenne River.

Biden says the group needs time to study that request.

The Environmental Protection Agency did today adjust water quality standards on the upper reaches of the Sheyenne....a move that will allow the Devils Lake outlet to operate more often.

The EPA says it it will allow sulfate levels in the Sheyenne to be as high as 750 milligrams per liter. In the past, the outlet would have to shut down if the sulfate level in the Sheyenne near the outlet rose above 450 milligrams per liter.

Outlet opponents have said the salty water poses a threat to downstream communities.
