Owner of Dog Abandoned in GF Apartment Charged

A criminal charge has been filed against the owner of a malnourished dog that was found dead in an empty Grand Forks apartment.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A criminal charge has been filed against the owner of a malnourished dog that was found dead in an empty Grand Forks apartment.

The Grand Forks Herald reports an arrest warrant for abandoning an animal has been issued for the owner of Lyric, a 5-year-old female Pekingese.

The dog's body was discovered inside an apartment on Sept. 8. Veterinarians couldn't determine how Lyric died, but the corpse weighed 6 pounds instead of the expected 15 to 20 pounds for a Pekingese.

The dog's 24-year-old owner told police that he had been living in Minneapolis for more than month and thought a friend was caring for Lyric.

Neighbors told police they heard the dog whimpering two or three weeks ago, but didn't intervene because they thought someone was caring for Lyric.
