A 36-year-old homeless man is facing an assault charge after police say he beat up another man under the Sorlie Bridge in East Grand Forks, knocking him unconscious and causing severe head injuries.

Edward Daley made his first appearance in Polk County Court today.

The judge set Daley's bond at $100,000 cash.

East Grand Forks Police say they were dispatched to the Sorlie Bridge late Wednesday night where they found a man who was unconscious and had blood all over his face. Cory Hewitt is in Altru hospital, but his condition is not being released. His wife was also hurt in the fight, but not as bad.

There were several people at the scene at the time of the fight.

Lt. Rod Hajicek of the East Grand Forks Police Department says, “There were five or six people that were coming to this area to work the beet harvest. They were basically homeless when they arrived and staying under the bridge.”

Authorities say alcohol was a factor in the fight.
