Sen. Franken Wants New Federal Debt Collector Law

Debt collection practices that target the wrong person or seek money from people who have paid up are behind Minnesota Sen. Al Franken's latest bill.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Debt collection practices that target the wrong person or seek money from people who have paid up are behind Minnesota Sen. Al Franken's latest bill.

Franken detailed his federal legislation Monday at the state Capitol. He is expected to formally introduce it later in the week.

The proposal would ban debt collectors from seeking to have people arrested or jailed over unpaid debts. It would also stiffen penalties against debt collectors who use illegal methods to collect money.

Franken appeared with two Democratic legislators who have pushed for new debt collection regulations at the state level. Sen. Ron Latz and Rep. Joe Mullery (MUHL'-er-ee) say they will introduce similar proposals when the Legislature convenes next year.
