Public Works Wants to Use Landfill Methane to Heat City Buildings

The Grand Forks safety and service committee is looking into creating more energy efficient means to heat city buildings.

The Grand Forks safety and service committee is looking into creating more energy efficient means to heat city buildings.

The Grand Forks Public works department is looking to see if it would be feasible to collect Methane gasses from the landfill to provide heat and electricity for the Waste Water Treatment Plant and the garbage bailing facility.

Public works says they spend 800 thousand dollars a year on the water plant, so the savings could be substantial.

"We want it because it's an environmentally positive project but at the same time it has to be economically viable for us to proceed with these projects and not do projects just to do projects," said Todd Feland, Grand Forks Public Works Director.

They hope to make a decision at the next city council meeting.
