It may be early in the flu season, but the virus has hit the Devils Lake School District hard this year. The district has had as many as a hundred students absent during flu season in the past, but absences have been higher this year. Last week there were about 1-hundred students out per day. Yesterday there were 170 students absent, and today more than 200 were out. That's about 12 percent of the student population. Superintendent Steve Swiontek says he's never seen this many absences. He says the district is being careful to keep the schools clean. Teachers are encouraging hand-washing and reminding students to be careful not to spread germs.
Steve Swiontek: "On a normal day we have about 30 to 40 kids gone district wide, so obviously when you have 200 kids, the flu bug has really hit."
Swiontek says the schools would only be closed if the county health department ordered it.
