Officials: Statue Hung at UMC a Prank

A student has come forward in the case of a hanging statue depicting an African American at the U of M in Crookston.

CROOKSTON, Minn. (AP) — Officials say a statue painted to depict a person of color that was found hanging from a building at the University of Minnesota-Crookston was a prank, not a racial statement.

That's the conclusion of police officers and campus officials who interviewed a male student who admitted hanging the three-foot wooden statue by a rope from the roof of the student center.

University spokesman Andrew Svec says the university's Student Conduct Committee will meet to determine any disciplinary action. Criminal charges won't be filed.

University associate vice chancellor Peter Phaiah tells The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead the student says he hung the statue as a prank on its owner and didn't consider the racial implications.

Phaiah calls it "incredibly poor judgment."
