Berg Says Estate Tax Should Remain Dead

North Dakota Republican congressional candidate Rick Berg says the federal estate tax should stay dead.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota Republican congressional candidate Rick Berg says the federal estate tax should stay dead.

Berg held a news conference Tuesday at a rural Cass County farm to promise he would support permanently repealing the estate tax. Berg calls it the "death tax" and he says dropping the tax would help prevent family farms and businesses from being sold to pay federal taxes.

The estate tax is not in effect this year. But unless Congress acts before the end of the year, it will reappear in 2011 and apply to estates worth more than $1 million.

Berg is running against incumbent Democrat Earl Pomeroy. Pomeroy favors raising the estate tax exemption to $3.5 million, but he doesn't support repealing it.
