A former organizer of the Grand Cities Art Fest in the Grand Forks area is accused of embezzling more than $30,000 from a nonprofit group.
38-year-old Laurel Bartlett made her initial court appearance Monday, posted $10,000 bail and was released. She has a preliminary hearing set for Nov. 8 on a felony theft charge.
Bartlett was executive director of the Downtown Leadership
Group, which used to manage Art Fest. She was fired in March 2008 after the group's board discovered money was missing from the group's bank account.
Bartlett faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted. Her attorney, Shawn Autrey, did not immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press on Tuesday seeking comment.
