Rugby's Wind Power Project Dedicated

North Dakota's newest wind farm is up and running. Tuesday Iberdrola Renewables and Senator Byron Dorgan cut the ribbon and opened the farm to the public.

Construction began on the Rugby Wind Power Project in October of 2008.

The 71 turbine farm will be able to power about 45,000 homes.

It covers more than 9,000 acres of land leased from 49 local landowners.

Senator Dorgan says it's important for people to understand that North Dakota has more than just oil and coal.

Thousands of jobs have been created by wind power and the city of Rugby is excited to see the benefits from the finished project.

"The school system will benefit, the business community will benefit and we have another work force in town which will also be good for the businesses and the community," explained Dondi Sobolik, Executive Director for the Rugby Chamber of Commerce.

17 full-time jobs have been created because of the construction of the wind farm.

It is also expected to contribute about $2 million annually in the form of landowner lease payments and property taxes.
