Dorgan Supports Spirit Lake Federal InjunctionSenator Byron Dorgan has written four letters to the Benson County Commission asking them not to close a polling site on the Spirit Lake Reservation.
Since no action is being taken in favor of the Tribe, they're filing for a federal injunction.
Dorgan says he doesn't understand the counties actions.
He is asking U.S. Attorney Tim Purdon to take a look at the case and see how fast it can be pushed through.
Dorgan says he understands that some counties want to try the vote by mail system, but if people want to come to a polling place they should be able to.
He says the county should be making it easier for people to vote, not harder.
"Listen, this makes no sense at all for the Benson County Commission to decide the only place you can cast a vote is in Minnewauken. That is a very big area. It's got flood issues in terms of roads. There has always been a polling place on the indian reservation," explained Senator Dorgan.
Dorgan was also honored today by the Spirit Lake Nation for the work he's done for North Dakota Native Americans.
