A group of pastors in Thief River Falls is working with the county to get what they say is a much needed homeless shelter in the area.

Right now the closest shelter is in Crookston.

The pastors are working to change that with what they say is a growing homeless population.

Last week the group of 5 pastors met with the Pennington County commission to talk about how to open a shelter.

Pastor Bruce Fischer says he's been getting more and more calls from homeless people asking for a place to stay.

Fisher wants to work with the Northlands Rescue Mission in Grand Forks to open a satellite shelter in Thief River.

Something that could be part of the missions long term plan.

Bruce Fischer: "It's very preliminary we have some short term issues to address, but we have a long term goal that could be dealt with through these discussions."

Fischer says he'll try to work with the Salvation Army too to raise money to help homeless in the mean time.

The next step will be to meet with the Department of Human Services.
