Heavy Lake Region Truck Traffic Damaging Roads

Drivers in the Lake Region are having to slow down in construction zones, but now also in non-construction zones due to potholes and other roadway damages.

Potholes are forming on a number of roads from increased truck traffic.

Other problems include rough spots where the trucks enter from county lines or gravel roads.

Wet material is falling from the trucks and then becoming hardened, causing rough spots for drivers.

Wayde Swenson of the North Dakota Department of Transportation says in order to decide who is required to fix the roadway, it needs to be determined what caused the damage.

"It has to be monitored and we are monitoring it and if it's needed, we will get out and do a fix," Swenson said.

He says that if it's found that the trucks have created the potholes or other road damage, the contractor is to take care of the road maintenance.
