A Grand Forks lawyer has been named by Gov. John Hoeven to the Southeast Judicial District Court, which is chambered in New Rockford, ND.
James Hovey, a New Rockford native, replaces Judge James Bekken, who passed away earlier this year.
"James brings a wealth of legal experience to this judgeship, both as a litigator and mediator, and will do an outstanding job for the citizens of the Southeast Judicial District," Hoeven said in a statement issued Wednesday. "He has the integrity, judicial temperament, education and experience necessary to be an effective judge and will serve the district well."
In addition to his legal practice, Hovey has served as city attorney for Larimore and as an instructor at the University of North Dakota Center for Legal Studies.
The Southeast Judicial District has seven judges and covers 11 counties. It includes the cities of Jamestown, Valley City and Wahpeton.
Hovey graduated with a Bachelor's degree from UND and a master's from the University of Arizona. He also attended the UND law school, graduating with distinction.
