UND's search for a new athletic conference has suddenly taken a dramatic turn.
UND has canceled its site visit from the Summit League, scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday. Coincidentally, the Big Sky Conference will be making an announcement on Monday and it is "very likely" they will be announcing "additions" to the D-I (FCS) conference, according to Big Sky Media Relations Director Jon Kasper.
UND Director of Athletics Brian Faison said the decision to cancel the site visit will be addressed on Monday. Faison made no further comment.
UND is a current member of the Great West Conference.
So what does this mean? Jon Kasper, the media relations director for the Big Sky Conference told WDAZ that it is "very likely" that additions to the current 9-member league will be announced Monday.
Unlike the Summit League, the Big Sky offers football, which has been a high priority in UND's search for a new conference home. Earlier this fall, current Great West members Cal Poly and UC Davis accepted invitations to the Big Sky as football-only members. Since then, the Big Sky has expressed interest in the remaining conference members Southern Utah, South Dakota, and UND. If the three schools were added, it would creat a fourteen team football conference, with twelve teams for the rest of the sports.
