Denver Pioneers forward Jesse Martin is scheduled to have emergency surgery Sunday in Minneapolis as a result of injuries sustained in Saturday's 3-0 WCHA win at North Dakota, according to a Denver Post report.
The newspaper reports that Martin sustained three neck fractures, and will have surgery to relieve swelling of the spinal cord.
Martin had his head down when he was run into by UND's Brad Malone in the second period. No penalty was called until the officials conferred. Malone was then assessed a five-minute charging major and a game misconduct. Martin was removed from the ice on a stretcher.
Initial reports Saturday night indicated Martin was taken to Altru Hospital for precautionary reasons.
But Martin's father, Terry, told the Post that his son was knocked unconscious and did not immediately have use of his extremities. The Post reports that on the way to Altru Hospital, Jesse Martin regained movement but was not sensitive to touching or pinching, and was in extreme pain.
Jesse Martin is a senior from Edmonton. He has one goal and three assists in eight games this season.
