PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. (AP) — A North Dakota pilot was killed when his experimental plane crashed in a Wisconsin cornfield.
The Sauk County sheriff's office says 51-year-old Thomas Mitchell of West Fargo, N.D., died at the scene of Monday's crash.
Chief Deputy Chip Meister tells WISC-TV Mitchell was heading to Merrill to meet his wife when the plane crashed just after leaving the Sauk Prairie Airport.
Deputies said Mitchell owned the plane, built in 2004, but they believe this flight may have been a test run.
Witnesses report seeing the aircraft flying north when a wing began to come apart, followed by the second wing breaking off at about 2 p.m.
The sheriff's office and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
