LEONARD, N.D. (AP) — The derailment earlier this week of four cars on a Red River Valley & Western train in Leonard appears to have been caused by an internal defect.

The railroad's Carl Gruebele said that the defect wasn't able to be detected by its inspectors. And, he says, because the line through Leonard wasn't one of the railroad's primary lines, a machine that checks for internal problems wasn't brought through for several years.

The cars that derailed Tuesday night were carrying soybeans, which are now being hauled by truck to Casselton for processing.

Damage from the derailment is estimated at $90,000.
