ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - The Minnesota Secretary of State's Office has laid out a timeline that aims to finish a recount of the governor's race by Dec. 14.
Democrat Mark Dayton leads Republican Tom Emmer by less than 9,000 votes - or about four-tenths of a percentage point.
If Dayton's lead doesn't grow to more than half a percentage point by the time the state canvassing board determines final results, the votes will be counted again.
The secretary of state's timeline would start the recount on Nov. 29. The timeline sets three meetings of the state canvassing board to go over results Dec. 8, 9 and 10.
The board would then meet Dec. 14 to certify the election result.
Either side could then challenge the result in court. The new governor is scheduled to be sworn in Jan. 3.
