ND Counties differ on 'recovery zone' program

Grand Forks County commissioners have declared the county a "recovery zone," opening the door to more than $30 million, while Burleigh County commissioners have decided against a recovery zone designation and $9 million.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - County officials in North Dakota are not

of the same mind when it comes to accepting federal stimulus money

to help pay for certain economic development projects.

Grand Forks County commissioners have declared the county a

"recovery zone," opening the door to more than $30 million, while

Burleigh County commissioners have decided against a recovery zone

designation and $9 million.

The federal program is aimed at areas with significant economic

problems, such as unemployment and foreclosures. Burleigh County

commissioners said accepting the federal funds would send a mixed

signal about the economic climate in Bismarck and Burleigh County.

The vote was close - 3-2 to reject the money.

North Dakota has been allocated $225 million for the program

statewide. Cass County has been given the largest share - $73

million.
