BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's newly elected Republican U.S. House member says he's concentrating on putting together a staff and looking into committee assignments.
Rick Berg says an orientation session for new members of Congress is scheduled in Washington next week.
Berg says he's keeping an open mind about potential committee assignments.
He says he's concerned about federal spending, job creation, energy development and taxation, and he's looking for assignments that match up with those interests.
Berg defeated incumbent Democrat Earl Pomeroy last week. He'll be the first Republican congressman from North Dakota since 1980.
