NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) — The Three Affiliated Tribes has changed its requirement for tribal enrollment.
The Minot Daily News reports that members voted last week to allow only those with at least one-eighth degree Hidatsa, Mandan or Arikara blood to become enrolled members.
The move ends lineal descendency, which requires only that a tribal member be a descendant of an enrolled member.
About 57 percent of voters favored the change. Sixty-three percent approved a separate amendment that requires candidates for tribal business council and tribal chairman to have a minimum one-fourth Indian blood.
