Within the first half hour, over 100 people attended St. Vincent's 6th annual Empty Bowls, Full Hearts at St. Michael's Church in Grand Forks.

For $15, attendees got a bowl of soup, bread and dessert. They also get to keep their bowls, each one designed by volunteers around the city.

The money goes towards kids' summer lunches. Last year, St. Vincent's served over 9,000 free meals to youngsters. Organizers say they owe it to the community for years of support.

"The community has been awesome, not only are they here today to attend the event, but many of them have come to our community painting events and painted bowls so that we would have some for sale today," said

JoAnn Brundin, Executive Director of St. Vincent's.

The event runs until at 7 p.m. Monday.
