BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota legislative leaders have scheduled a formal ceremony to mark the handover of power from Gov. John Hoeven to Lt. Gov. Jack Dalrymple.

Hoeven becomes a U.S. senator in early January. He plans to resign as governor Dec. 7.

The Legislature is holding its organizational session Dec. 6-8, and lawmakers have approved an agenda that includes Hoeven's farewell remarks and Dalrymple's swearing in as governor. The ceremony starts at 11:30 a.m.

House Republican majority leader Al Carlson of Fargo says the organizational session has a tight schedule, but he says it's important for lawmakers to mark the transition of executive power.

Carlson says it's a "big deal" for North Dakota Republicans, because they haven't had a U.S. senator in 24 years.
