If a new Grand Forks Public library is built.. what should it include and where should it be built? Something people are talking about as part of a 10-day community conversation. And there is plenty to talk about...including the money it would take to build it.
Hal Gershman / GF City Council President: "The only way I think that it will be funded if people approve it would be through a sales tax."
Reporter: It's estimated a new library would cost about 19-million dollars. And most likely it would be paid for with a sales tax if Grand Forks voters approve it. So far.. a one half sales tax for 6 years has been talked about.
Hal Gershman: "Plus a definite absolute positive sunset. So they understand that when this tax is over. we are not going to play around with that. "
Instead of the half cent tax Grand Forks City Council President Hal Gershman says he would recommend making it a 1 cent sales tax over a three year period.
Hal Gershman: "I'am talking about the one cent because I like the idea of getting in and out quickly, that's what I like, plus it saves 300-thousand dollars in interest. "
Gershman says he has been happy about all the input he has been getting this week on the library. He says as conversations continue on the issues, he's hopes people have respect for others opinions.
Gershman: "We are a growing city. And there are some things that you have to pay for, or you decide to pay for. So whatever the citizens decide, and support what they say. You want it, we will get behind it."
