Those setting off fireworks within city limits could face a hefty fine

Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) - With fireworks now available, officers in the Grand Forks area are already getting noise complaints. So what are the laws and when can you get ready for the 4th of July?

The 4th of July is just 3 weeks away...

CORPORAL JON LAMP - Grand Forks Police Department: “Typically about a week before they go on sale we get a couple complaints coming into dispatch, I checked, we have had a couple so far and as the season gets going here we'll have many more.”

North Dakota and Minnesota have different laws and fines when it comes to both buying fireworks and when and where you can shoot them off. Although fireworks are on sale right now, people living in North Dakota cannot take theirs home until June 27th.

People in Minnesota can buy fireworks now but are limited to what they can use on the holiday.

JANE BREYER - Generous Jerry's General Manager: “Minnesota can sell cones, fountains, ground spinners, sparklers, wheels, things like that. Just nothing that goes up in the air and explodes.”

Fireworks cannot be set off on public property and if you plan on setting off fireworks within city limits you could face hefty fines.

Jon: “The fines could be up to a 101-dollar fine.”

AEISSO SCHRAGE - East Grand Forks Police Department: “All the citations are at least 110-dollars. 100 to 185 dollars.”

Officers from both sides of the Red River want to remind people about the laws. Especially within city limits where not only property can get damaged, but people can get hurt.

Aeisso: “Last year we had a fire created by fireworks, landed in someones garage and burned down the garage. So because we're in a city we're going to enforce it a lot more than maybe a county would where there's room.”

People in North Dakota can buy fireworks June 27th through July 6th.
