DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) — Investigators are trying to figure out how a load of 18 large hay bales being hauled on a trailer caught fire near Devils Lake.
Devils Lake Rural firefighter Jeff Hawn says the only theory they've come up with so far is that a motorist passing in the opposite direction tossed out a cigarette that landed in the bales.
The Highway Patrol says Loren Kurtz of Devils Lake was towing the bales on a flatbed trailer on state Highway 20 Wednesday afternoon when he noticed the fire and stopped on the shoulder of the road. A passing driver had already alerted authorities, and firefighters who responded put out the blaze.
No one was hurt, but the trailer and some of the bales were damaged.
