A Standing Rock tribal council member says the tribe's chairman told him they need to ask the State Board of Higher Education for more time on the Fighting Sioux nickname issue.

The deadline for the tribe to ask for more time to decide if they will hold a public vote on UND's use of the nickname is October 31st.

If the tribe doesn't ask for an extension, UND will begin the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname.

Standing Rock Tribal Chair Charlie Murphy says he realizes the deadline is approaching, and that the tribe has started discussions.

Murphy says he's been talking with council members about the deadline.

Council member Jessie Mclaughlin tells WDAZ he talked with Murphy today who told him they need to to ask for a one month deadline extension.

Tomorrow there will be a committee meeting where Mclaughlin says it will likely be talked about.

The state board of higher education already has said they would give an extension if it is requested.
